Today our own Henry David is 5 years old!
I remember so clearly leaping out of bed and racing to the bathroom as my water broke. I was so excited I called my parents even though it was 5:30 in the morning. David had already gone to work, so I actually got to page him and tell him to come home. He was 10 days late, so I was very ready to get the show on the road. Going to the hospital was fun, everyone was excited about a birth. My nurses were fabulous and patient. One of them worked a double shift so she could stay with us (Diedre was her name). After long hours we realized that things were not progressing and our options seemed to dwindle. Eventually Henry David was born, via cesarean at 5:14 am on May 25th 2001.
I was under general anesthesia so David wasn't allowed in the room, which meant that neither one of us witnessed his arrival. Luckily, Cory, the nice anesthesiologist, snapped a bunch of pictures so we do have proof of his delivery! What a strange feeling waking up and seeing David and hearing tell the nurse that we had a boy. I said, I told you it was a boy." Then I went back into a pain medication induced sleep for another 5 hours.
After I finally woke up and got settled in another room, David brought Henry in. I KNEW that Henry was ours as soon as I saw him. I have heard stories of people having bonding problems after a C-section or having a feeling that their child might not be theirs, but I knew. What a blessing.
Our birth story was far from perfect and we encountered bumps along the way, but the end result was all that we could have asked for.
I love Henner and I am so happy that he was sent to our family. He is cheerful, creative, funny, handsome, bright, obedient, and loving. What an amazing son.
Happy Birthday!
I think that turning 5 seems monumental for a few reasons.
1) I clearly remember my 5th birthday. I have no memory of any birthday prior to that so when I realize that Henry might always remember this day, there is a little pressure to make it happy.
2) 5 is often associated to beginning school. Keeping in line with that, HD will begin Kindergarten in August. (I also remember my first day of kindergarten)
3) I like odd numbers and 5 is one of the best ones, in my opinion.
4) Big things happen at age 5. Riding a bicycle, seeing Star Wars, going to birthday parties by yourself...
And the list goes on.
Happy Birthday!

Awwww, I'm getting all misty!
I love that picture of him all wrapped up right after birth with the doctor's hands (I'm guessing).
I remember my 5th birthday too--a lunch party at Mimi's with Pip McK and Michelle Davis. Don't remember any birthdays before that.
I am guessing that the hands in the picture is a doctor or a nurse. Like I said, I was unconscious, so who knows what happened?
very cute and touching. we love the hd too.
Can't wait to give the birthday boy a big hug!!
Such great pictures- thanks for sharing. I hope he has (or had at this point) a very happy birthday. And no training wheels is a very exciting development!
Happy Birthday Henners!
