David and I ventured out last night for our last trip to IKEA before we head to the Pacific Northwest, which does not currently have an IKEA close by.
At first we were going to pick up a few things, such as this. The IKEA PS sofa bed, for the playroom.
Then we thought that we needed this Norden dining table ( that pulls out to 105") to go with these new chairs that we had to get because our dining chairs literally fell apart when our friends came to dinner. And they were small people.
And then we realized that we needed some new bookcases since Aunt Joan's house is well-equiped with built-ins and we haven't needed any for the last few years. So we chose these, which many of our friends and family also have. We finally made it to the checkout line with 2 huge carts and manuevered ourselves to the parking lot, where I broke the doors to the store (that's a completely different story). David pulled the trusty Honda around that he has nicknamed the Falcon, for it's reliability (and it is for sale if anyone is interested). So then came the whole load up the 2 door hatchback.
And this is what we came up with. Where is Phoebe might you ask? I actually squeezed into the front seat ( and was properly seat belted) and hung on to the rolled up mattress that hung out of the window about 3 feet and to the table that was tied to the top of the car. We then drove home going 30-40 mph with the hazards on, on I-80. And we saw a cop and were shocked when he didn't pull us over. Although he may have tried and we weren't able to see him because there was pretty much ZERO visibilty. The things we will do for the love of IKEA and all things Swedish.
Maybe it's time for a bigger car? These are the times that I am still so disappointed that we couldn't work thing out with VW.

That is absolutely hilarious! Best I have seen yet.
Reminds me of when Nate and I finally broke down and bought a new mattress and box springs (we woke up one morning and the air mattress that we had been using for 6 months was deflated). We tied a KING size mattress and two box springs on the top of our hyundai hatchback. We drove home on I35 and counted our blessings that the mattresses didn't fly off the top of the car.
Hilarious. That reminds me of our Christmas tree hanging out both windows of White Lightning coming down the freeway from Woodland. Good memories! I too love Ikea and I love your finds.
I would have taken the Chevelle, however it is at the Mechanic's getting a new alternator and probably a new carburator(sp?) since it was spewing gasoline everytime David drove it. And we have to get it to Portland sometime next week. Too bad I love that car too much to get rid of it!
I love, love love, IKEA!! Just 2 weekends ago, while in Chicago, I first visited it. I plan on flying back to visit many more times.
Good thing they finally have an IKEA in West Sac now instead of having to go to Emeryville! Looks like it was quite a ride.
I'm impressed with your finds, and with your finesse getting those finds home! Sean and I are waiting to redo our bedroom until the Ikea is finished here in Draper sometime this winter. I can't wait! Good luck in the Pacific Northwest!
Oh Keli, I wanted new bedroom furniture, but David had to draw the line somewhere, and apparantly that was it!
I too am waiting for IKEA ... opening near me this FALL!! YEAH!!!
oh my gosh, phoebe! i had NO IDEA this is what you were alluding to last night. i just thought that you got the PS sofa. Not norden, not expedit (i love the ikea names). That is the most hilarious thing I've seen. i wish wish wish i had seen it live in the flesh. the things we'll do for ikea. (i have a few of my own crazy ikea stories from when it was in emeryville, but they're not worth repeating because this one blows the socks off of them.....)
Or, there was the time we found these 2 large chairs at DI in Salt Lake, tied them on the top of the caravan, and drove back to Texas.
If only we had had Ikea back then.
