Is it weird to covet someones pantry? Or more exactly, their specific, set aside, one purpose food storage ROOM!
I really need to move back to Utah so that I can get myself one of these. I haven't lived anywhere else where builders make a point of building a food storage room as part of a house. Although my parents did build a room in part of their garage that was supposed to be a food storage room, but the last time we were there that was Agnes' bedroom and I didn't see a whole lot of food in their. Tons of baskets and fabric remnants, but not a lot of canned fruit.
I digress.
Janelle posted today about her new goal of building her food storage. I just started reading this woman's blog and find her fascinating and quite inspiring. I could really get into this. Okay, I admit it, I have gotten into it before, but I have also lost interest. For some reason getting a great deal at the Gap is more exciting to me than getting a great deal at Albertson's. But now I find myself tempted to get the paper again (for coupons) and maybe even look around to see if there is a Super Wal-Mart worth driving to. I do miss a good Wal-Mart. If you want to experience Wal-Mart nirvana make sure you stop at the one in Dixon, Ca. No lines and it's pretty clean and groceries have never been cheaper. Before you get up in arms about me supporting Wally World, remember that was when David was in Grad School. Totally okay. We had no money. Not that we have any now, but you understand.
ANYWAY.
Food Storage. It's the new black.

I stopped in a Super Wal-Mart with my Aunt one time and I was SHOCKED at how cheap groceries & sundries were compared to the normal store and even Target. After a couple long-line experiences at WM, I'd never gone back. As a poor grad student though, I sure could use a Wal-Mart.
Hey, I say shop where your dollar goes the farthest! If you can stand the lines and other stuff than go for it!
I'd love to see where you plan to put your stores since you live in basically the same sort of space that we do. I just don't know where to put it so that is my excuse for not doing it - that and the fact that we'll be moving in a year or two and I don't believe in moving food.
p.s. you should read moneysavingmom.com - she does a weekly post about deals at Wal-Mart and many of them are with printable coupons, so you wouldn't even have to buy the paper.
Wow and Impressive. My mom has a room like this. Must be the Utah thing.
All the food storage stuff is great. I feel pretty good about ours, although it is NOTHING like in the picture. That is awesome. But I do love our Wal-Mart, with the McDonald's at the entrance. It is soooo much cheaper than our Albertson's and I rather enjoy a one stop shopping experience. Plus, at WM I don't feel bad about ripping open crackers, string cheese and french bread for Soph to munch on whilst we shop. It is the only way I can get through it. Good luck on the food storage. We have some in the garage, and the rest in Sophie's closet.
I am dying over this pantry! It looks like a restaurant pantry because of the large cans though. But I could use all that bulls eye BBQ sauce.
How can you stand to read the Alchemist again? Wasn't that the very first book group book?
Janelle, I'll be honest. I don't even have a copy of the book and I basically have no intention of reading it. I hope that my memory can reach back 7 years and pull out a few decent comments at bookgroup.
Thank you for reminding me about the WalMart in Dixon. I am sorely disappointed with the one here in Vacaville. The last time I went there, I almost started hyperventillating because it was so dirty with flies everyone like the dirty character in Charlie Brown. What was his name again? Off to Dixon I go.
I started ordering a month's supply of food storage through the Church's website. I can never have too much oatmeal or rice. But what about sugar and instant milk? And water? My next quest. Little by little, right?
I don't think you are doing too shabbily in the food storage department. If I recall correctly, you canned roughly four thousand quarts of applesauce last week.
Dixon wal-mart is totally different than any Wal-mart i have ever been too. The Wal-mart in Woodland is totally ghetto. Wally World does have the best deals for a Grad student.
