You all have heard about the historical, miraculous, fear-inducing emergency landing in the Hudson River last week. I assume that if you read blogs you are also slightly in touch with world news. Am I right?
Needless to say, this sort of news item completely fascinates me. Especially since I have an inexplicable fear of flying. I can't decide if this story makes me more or less nervous to fly. We'll see.
The thing that has made this story the Story of the Year for me is that I know (knew) the wife of the pilot (Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger) that maneuvered those 155 passengers to safety! I swear, I am practically famous now.
Sweet Laurie Sullenberger used to get her haircut at Mes Amis where I worked when I was pregnant with Henry. And I can tell you this honestly, she was one of the nicest clients that came in. Definitely a favorite.
It makes sense that the pilot had truly kind wife. I think that if he had a nagging, mean wife he wouldn't have tried so hard to make it home safely for dinner.
Note to self-next time I get on a plane, ask the pilot how his marriage is going.

Good point. I think that this was a good story with a happy ending! I think if I sat there and worried too much that my mind would get the best of me and I would never fly. I try not to think about it.
Although there is this lady here that never flew on the same plane as her husband. If they were going somewhere together, they took separate flights incase something happened to one of them.
I have a high school friend whose kids go to the same school has their kids. There's another degree!
Well, that is an interesting connection.
It's nice to feel connected - even by degrees.
This story fascinated me also. In fact I became almost consumed with finding out if there were any babies on the plane.
There was one baby, if you wondered and didn't know.
I just kept thinking, "I think I could deal with something like that but what if it was me and my 2 kids?!" but it looks like it is in fact possible to survive a plane crash with a baby. That is pretty crazy...and amazing.
We should all be so nice that our husbands will fight tooth and nail to get home to us!
Marcia Wilson saw a news cast about the baby on the plane - her comment was that as the mom handed him off to the rescuer on the boat, the baby looked happy and content - which amazed her. The baby was 9 months old.
There was also a toddler who seemed unfazed too. Maybe they just thought it was a great adventure. And apparently the passengers started to panic but someone "took charge" and started organizing and ordering people around and then they were okay!
What does that tell us??
Well, I feel connected now since I know you. And your are totally famous! That is an amazing story and I think that is a great question for future flights.
Very good point! I'm going to have to remember that one.
