I've been meaning to document this for a few months and haven't had the time to actually do it!
Henry played basketball this year for the first time. It was awesome. We ended up at a league at the local non-denominational Christian church which was great for a number of reasons and not so great for just a few reasons. A major draw was that they did not have Sunday games or practices and they were pretty reasonably priced. One of the drawbacks were the half-time devotionals. This probably wasn't always a drawback, only when the man they asked to speak one week used a few racial slurs. I am pretty sure that he did it unintentionally since he was 80 years old and the slurs he used seemed really outdated. However, it was still awkward. Pretty similar to an LDS Testimony meeting gone awry (flashbacks of spontaneous singing of James Taylor songs, anyone?).
All of that said, I loved Henry's coach. She was so nice and down-to-earth and positive. When Henry missed a game because he was sick she told me to tell him that their family would keep him in their prayers. She is my kind of people! After every game the team had a meeting and the coaches gave out stars to each child and praised them for their actions that week in the game. Perfect! But the best moment of all came early in the season. The first practice to be exact. Henry received all of his info and his team name.

Awesome! My eyes are there!
Love it.
Didn't you know, J.C. was a big baller himself? Right?!
It is so fun to watch your kids grow up...
James Taylor is sacrament meeting? Are you 4 real?
I thought you were going to post about a little Hispanic boy named Jesus!!
Looks like fun.
"I am an M, I am an M, I am an M O R M O M LDS, LDS" - Your post made me think of that!!
Nice post. It is good to mix and mingle with other faiths and know that we are similar in many respects.
Your post reminded me of this last week. One of the old guys said the N word, sort of. He said Ni****dly (I am not sure I got all the letters). He was talking about being stingy with tithing, which I think that word was once meaning that, but now is a little different. Anyway, it was double embarrasment because the Sunday School teacher was African American. Ugh.
The word "niggardly" has always meant stingy or miserly. It's use as an adjective predates the use of the N word by 300 years - and it's origin is Scandinavian.
Hopefully all concerned didn't make a big flap out of it - it's important to know what words truly mean - although in American circles the word seems to be dying a quick death from "political correctness." In Europe, that would be Great Britain probably, it's often used and accepted without anyone even having a racial thought about it.
Just an FYI from an old wordsmith - or should I say a "wannabe" wordsmith!!
It is such a challenge to find activities that don't fall on Sunday. I'm glad you were able to find one.
From your title I thought there might be a picture of Jesus on the back board or something. Glad to know there wasn't. ha ha
We loved that league!!! Nothing wrong in today's world with throwing in some good old Christian values!
i would take james taylor sons over racial slurs anytime.
and i am glad henry had a great season.
I love that they prayed for you to be healthy! I need a few more of those in my kids lives. :D Way to go HAWKS
