Thoughts?

I was checking my email today and I received my daily Real Simple email that usually features a recipe. I love Real Simple recipes. Some of my family's favorites are form their site, but today's recipe has me questioning their taste buds. It seems that something called "French Fry Pie" belongs next to "Tater Tot Casserole". Not something I would have expected from Real Simple. But maybe I'm wrong. What do you think? Would you make it? Do you make Tater Tot Casserole? I have never tried it. Maybe I'm the one missing out? Maybe I'm a food snob? Although I highly doubt it. My pantry is well stocked with Cream of (insert veggie or poultry here) soups and boxed dinners.
French Fry Pie
Ingredients
- 4 cups frozen shoe-string French fries
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1 14-ounce jar marinara sauce
Directions
- Heat oven to 425° F.
- Spread the fries on a baking sheet. Bake until golden, about 25 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cook the ground beef in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until no trace of pink remains, 8 to 10 minutes. Spoon off any excess fat. Add the marinara sauce and cook until warmed through.
- Transfer to an 8-by-11-inch or 8-inch-square baking dish. Top with the fries. If desired, return to oven for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Gag.
Though, I was raised and tater tot casserole, and I can't say I hate it. I don't choose to cook it myself, but I don't HATE it.
I got that email too. I didn't even open it once I saw the name of the recipe, so I guess you are in good company with the food snobbery.
Hmm - is it like a major joke or something??
I'm more of a Noodle-letti Fan myself.
Gross. Don't do it, friend.
My kids love tater tot casserole, but this looks kinda icky. And from Real Simple? I'm surprised. Maybe they had a little lapse in judgment that day.
anyone who grew up in a family that was served burrito casserole cannot be a food snob. but that looks baaaad.
i don't know, maybe it wouldn't hurt to try it, it doesn't look horrible to me. throw some cheese on top and see if it's a hit with the kiddos. just my 2 cents. :)
Maybe try and add some crushed up ritz crackers on top of the cheese on top of the fries on top of the ground beef.
Really? The only thing to compare would be frito pie (a common texas dish)
But I tend to steer clear of casseroles in general. (I don't think far enough ahead to have time to bake anything for dinner).
My opinion? You don't need to try everything. Some things you should just use your common sense.
don't fall to the pressure. just pass it by.
I was just thinking of Burrito Casserole the other day. I need the recipe.
French fry meal sounds gross to me. Fries, ground beef and marinara? Yuck.
But that's just me:)
It's not the ground beef and Marinara that weirds me out, it's the french fries on top.
Maybe it was an April Fools joke, 7 months late. (or 5 months early)
That looks terrible.
So Hannah, since when did you begin disparaging Burrito Casserole?
Just wait till you have to feel small children night after night!!
And Robyn, I'll email you the recipe!!
Yuck. I would never make that!
I'll eat anything once
I am not sure what the big fuss is about. You eat chill fries. Looks no different to me.
this one gets a skippie for sure. Maybe next time, real simple. Though I have been known to munch on a tater tot casserole more than once in my life so does that make me a hypocrite?
We love (our version) of tater tot casserole although I don't think I would try french fry pie. Good luck!
That looks and sounds disgusting. I would definitely not make that, nor did I grow up on tater-tot casserole. Yuck!
Okay, my Aunt Mary has a point here. It is like upside down Chili Fries.
This has given me a whole new perspective.
Thanks Babs, I am looking forward to it!
But marinara sauce isn't in chili, even though chili is tomato based. If it was more of a recipe for homemade chili with the fries instead of spaghetti sauce, then it wouldn't look so bad...but this really looks/sounds awful. Let us know if you try it though!
