David and I are not very good at planning "real" family vacations. Most of our vacation time is spent traveling to visit family, which is fun. Lately, though, I have been reflecting on the trips that my family took as a kid. We went on vacation every summer. It was fun. We had very low expectations. I think growing up in Southern California kind of makes you immune to vacation envy. Most people came to us to go on vacation.
When my parents started going to St. George , in AUGUST, we thought that was what vacations were supposed to be. We still laugh about the way the Terrills vacation. As long as there was air conditioning, Alberstons movie rentals, a pool, a bookstore and copious amounts of chocolate ice cream we were just fine. Every once in a while we would venture out to sight see- if you count sight seeing as a visit to Jacob Hamblin's house and the occasional trek up to Zion's National Park (both of which are very cool places to go).
In an effort to vacation as a family, David and I have been planning a few mini-vay's. In October we went to Sun River. It was fabulous. And this week we headed up to Great Wolf Lodge. Also fabulous . I love going places with just our little family. It makes for a very different experience. We will always love to visit extended family, but making time for these getaways has been a blessing to us.
I wondered if the kids found these trips as much fun as I do. Then yesterday Henry informed me that David and I are the best parents EVER! Apparently we always have fun. His words-"All we do is fun stuff. All the time!' (I am not sure how accurate that description is, especially after his reaction to doing his home work when we got back last night.) And again later that day, I was swimming with Agnes and she was having a great time swimming around in her life jacket. She was singing and then she looked up at me and said, "I am so, so happy."
It looks like the effort to make time for these family trips is definitely worth it.

robbie and i have been wondering about the future of our vacations lately for the same reasons. i wonder what it's going to be like for us if we're still out here when our kids are older! (heaven forbid. i need a california winter RIGHT NOWWWWWW.)
That is so sweet. I love that they are so excited about it!
It's pretty tough to "explain" taking vacations to St. George in July and August.
But there are lots of happy memories - and it's wonderful you are building them too.
Any photos??
Glad you are building happy memories. That is what we always hope for.
Awh! My heart melted a little. So sweet.
