I feel like with only 5 weeks left of this pregnancy I am in full blown nesting mode. I am still taking it easy (don't worry, Mom!), but I am slowly checking projects off of my list. Mostly projects that David is doing for me. I think having a surrogate nester is the way to go! He is much faster than I am and he won't have to worry about going into labor.
I am finding, though, that I have 2 big problems with the nesting phase. The first is that most nesting urges just start a chain reaction and create WAY more work than I originally intended. Take the front on the house, for example. I wanted different shrubs in the front. The ones that were there were incredibly ugly and were in pretty bad shape. So David bought new plants for me for Mother's day. When he was out planting I stared to comment on the drainage problems that we have out there. Soon we decided to put some rocks in were there was a ton of mud, which led to the building of a retaining wall that probably won't be done for a while. How did planting a few plants turn into building a retaining wall?
The other problem with nesting is that I end up "stocking up" on stuff that I may not actually need. A few weeks ago I went to Joann's and they had flannel on sale. I decided that I might need some flannel to make a few things for the baby. Not that I need a few more things for the baby, but it is so fun to make things and I am sure I will be able to use them for baby gifts. Now I have 3 receiving blankets cut out and 8 burp cloths that need to be crocheted. Crocheted burp cloths? Apparently pregnancy has also aged me about 25 years. But I love doing a crocheted edge on things right now. Such a soothing hobby, especially when I am sitting on the couch watching A Baby Story every afternoon. I also have to watch insane amounts of TLC because soon shows like A Baby Story and Bringing Home Baby will not appeal to me anymore-they only seem entertaining when I am actually pregnant.
When I got all of the flannel at Joann's I had to get out my sewing machine and my bin of fabric. This is always a recipe for disaster. I then decided that I really needed a little sewing corner in the living room. So after we rearranged all the furniture (by we I mean David and Henry) and got out my sewing machine, I decided that my machine really needed a cover. I also decided that I needed to go through all of my fabric to figure out what had which led to another list of sewing projects that I should work on.
After I got all of the sewing stuff figured out, I thought that I should make a few meals to put in the freezer for after the baby. I thought this would be a good time to try out a free subscription to Deals to Meals. Deals to Meals is website that I had been reading for a while. She has some good tips for food storage and then started a business where she highlights the cheapest deals at local stores. just recently her service became available here in Oregon and then my friend Kacy talked about how much she loved it on her blog, so I had to give it a try.
After using it for one week I now have an insane amount of Snack Pack pudding in my pantry along with 10 bottles of ketchup and as many of spaghetti sauce. I did get some meals made for the freezer, but now I feel like I am hoarding pudding and ketchup. I guess it could be worse?
Since I started nesting I feel like my house is really coming along. However, I also feel like I have an unbelievable stash of flannel, crocheted burpcloths, and pudding. Not to mention onesies, baby shampoo, diapers and all the other stuff that I am actually supposed to be buying. I think this is how the people that are featured on Hoarders get their start. They have a baby and the nesting begins.

I feel the same way about baby story. I know when I am ready to have a baby because I can start watching it again. The only time I like it is when I am prego.
Ok. Crochet baby bibs. I love mine and they are a super quick thing to do . You basically make a dishcloth and extend one end for about 5 inches and then put a button hole on the end. Very cute and fun and functional. You can find patterns on ravelry.com. AND THEN, there is this website called www.dana-made-it.com I love it. Lots of cute ideas. AND, don't forget www.prudentbaby.com. She has some very cute DIY stuff like nursing covers and such.
Good luck! So fun.
Progress is progress! I'd say you're doing well!
sounds a lot like.. if you give a mouse a cookie! hope all goes well :)
i didn't realize i caught you in the middle of a nesting frenzy the other day when you were sewing your cover as you talked to me on the phone...
apparently i needed to be stocking up on ketchup because we just ran out tonight as we were making sloppy joes and had to improvise with tomato sauce.
i'm excited to see the new bushes and rocks!
I love little projects that turn into big accomplishments.
Enjoy the ketchup!
this made me laugh out loud. robbie and i really need to buy our tickets soon to come and see this ketchup for ourselves.
I LOLed about 10 times while reading this. "Crocheted burp cloths?" OK...I think I need to go read the whole post again and laugh again.
And I am there with ya on "A Baby Story." Only appealing when pregnant.
I can't wait to see all the improvements (and the pudding) when I come in September.
(Only appealing when I'm pregnant, sorry for the dangling modifier...if that's what that was)
I am laughing hard! I went crazy nesting for Tess, although I sure did get a lot done! You know when you get Q-tips out to clean the vents you have lost your mind!!! However crazy we get, I often wish for the nesting energy... it is nice to get things done!
I can envision it all and I am laughing! It's like having adult ADHD! I adore the thought of your making your crocheted burp pads. It does remind me of one of our favorite books "if you give a moose a muffin..."
I never really got the nesting urge. Now I'm beginning to wonder if that's why I always feel so far behind. Just look at all you (and David) can get done!!
Nothing is more terrifying than watching A Baby Story while pregnant. Alex knows to flip the channel fast or I get anxiety. No nesting urges here yet. Well except for rebuilding the nest.
I agree on A Baby Story, too. When I'm not pregnant I can't imagine EVER watching it. Also, this sounds a bit like if you give a mouse a cookie, which is why I don't like to start any crazy projects. I am a nutty nester, and can't allow anyone to do things for me. It takes away my pre baby anxiety to do it all myself. Which, is probably what puts me into labor. Anyways, good luck with it all. I am sure with your spitty babies, the burp cloths will come in very handy!
You're not a hoarder Phoebe! I've been to your place. You're super organized! Hoarders have way too much stuff and it's pretty obvious once you step into their living room... my initial thought when I stepped into yours-- "ocd?" .. ahhahah. I guess I should force myself to watch a baby story. For some reason, my brain refuses to induce labor these days! Seriously--- this baby needs to come out now, but nothing's happening!
love this. especially the snack pack pudding. that's classic. that's why i kind of hate coupons. i end up with a ton of stuff i didn't want, and 99% of them are for gross processed foods. have you ever seen a coupon for fresh blueberries or carrots? (not that i don't enjoy a little debbie snack every now and again.) :)
I love the hoarders start. So laughing. At least you are getting things ticked off your list..or David is anyway. :)
I totally agree with you on baby story. I too nest and sew a ton as I did during my last pregnancy and now I do not use half of what I made. Looking back I wonder what I was thinking making all of that stuff. I know I turn into a completely different person when I am pregnant. Good luck with everything in the next few weeks.
