Can FHE be a hobby?

I have become obsessed with FHE packets. Some of you may not be familiar, so I'll briefly sum up. In the LDS church,we have been counseled to hold Family Home Evening each Monday night. This is an opportunity to teach, listen, play and counsel w ith each other. Sometimes it can be difficult to come up with an interesting and fun lesson each week, so a cousin of a friend started an FHE group.

Every 2 months you come armed with 10 copies of a lesson and then you exchange with the other 10 ladies and come home with 10 new lessons! Sounds simple, until you factor in the "must-haves". Each lesson must have a scripture, a story, an activity/game, a song, and a treat recipe...All on cardstock and all laminated. Now the laminating and cardstock are right up my alley. I bought my own laminator and it was worth the 24 dollars. I enjoy the laminator.

After being so excited for my FHE group one of my dearest friends (who lives out of state) called and said she was starting one and we should be in each other's groups. This way I make the same lesson 20 times and come out with 20 new ones. A little bit if double dipping, if you will. Now, 2 groups may seem like a lot, but we meet every other month, so not a big deal. Then a friend here in town heard about and said, "Why don't we have one here. I'll bet so-and-so and so-and so would want to do it."

I AM NOW IN 3 FHE GROUPS!!!

Last night I was up until 11 pm laminating and sorting. David was cutting out tiny Jonah's and large whales with hinged jaws ( see Friend Jan 2006). Then I taped popsicle sticks to each little puppet. It looks great, I mailed off the ones to the group in Utah today and now I am sitting pretty for a few weeks.

And in a few more weeks I will have 30 new lessons for FHE.

I was talking to David and I asked if he thought I was crazy. I mean I do get a little obsessed with strange things sometimes. His reply was, " If you have to be obsessed with something, I don't thing FHE is a bad way to go." There you have it.

Maybe you could start being a consultant for novice FHE groups? It has possibilities - David's business and marketing acumen would be put to good use - they might even do a feature story on you in Real Simple!

If you give a mouse a cookie - we all know what happens!

Haha, I love it. In fact I would love to be sitting pretty waiting for 30 FHE lessons to come my way. However, I am not willing to do the work that comes with contributing--especially since I don't think Matt, Phil, OR Lynnette would appreciate tiny Jonahs or large whales with hinged jaws.

Someday, however.

Also: I can identify with obsession-type hobbies, and I think it's great, as long as it doesn't get out of control, which it doesn't sound like it has: getting out creative energy and working hard for the benefit of families all over the place, including yours. Way to go.

Mom posted while I was writing--she might have something there, I mean you could have a Shade-type possibility on your hands here...FHE kits. Only problem would be dividing the profits among your thirty or so FHE friends, in which case it might not be worth it.

When we lived in Logan I was in a FHE group and all the lessons were great. I was always up really late the night before the group trying to get them all done. My only problem... remembering to hold FHE so that I can use all the lessons that I have.

Been there done that! And I must say I love my 60 plus FHE lessons.

There really is no excuse now not to have FHE. I have lessons to last over a year!

In fact, just last night we used our 10 Commandments FHE lesson. I have used them over and over though the years. They are just so handy.

Amy gave me several very nice FHE lessons for Christmas one year. I used the Easter one last night. Very nice. I plan on making the special Easter cookies Saturday night!

I think the hardest part of having so many Lessons would be remembering to use them. (and chosing which one!)

I used to do the FHE group thing too. I ended up with a whole filing cabinet full of lessons. However, now we just use the Friend each month and then discard when we are done. No more storing a gajillion file folders and the lessons coincide with what they are learning in Primary for the month. And it is still easy enough to just open the magazine and have a ready lesson in less than five minutes. Even the kids can do it! But little kids sure do love those FHE folder lessons!

Good luck with all the cutting out Phoebe.

Betsy, I think that I got all your FHE packets. My kids love them and I love the fact that I didn't have to do all the work! They were laminated and all! Thanks, if I forgot to tell you when you sent them. I have another packet that I got for a bridal shower gift. It takes a long time to finish one. I haven't been that faithful. -Amy

The laminator really is the way to go. Especially if you ever spend time in YW or PRimary. OR just at home, you can really laminate anything!
