I have been getting a lot of different responses to our decision to move.
1. "You know, it rains a lot there."
( Oh really? I guess I just haven't been living in the U.S. at all for the last 28 1/2 years. I must have missed that.)
2. "Good for you for leaving California. If I had my way, we'd be leaving, too."
( I actually LOVE California, and if I had my druthers, we'd be staying here. We go where the job is. And it's always nice to have a change.)
3. "You know if you leave, you can never come back. "
(Says who? It's not like we are even in the housing market here, anyway)
4. "Who will be living in your house?"
( Who wouldn't want our sweet set-up? Thanks Joan and Fred)
5. "What are you going to do with all of your stuff?"
( Actually, that's me talking)
6. "Are you buying a house?"
( I wish, but we don't know anything about the place, yet)
7. "Just think of all the new restaurants that you'll get to try out."
( I'm looking forward to that, too!)
8. "Have you heard of Powell's?"
( Is the Pope Catholic? Me+Powell's=Bliss)
9. "Is David excited?"
(He better be, we are moving because of his new job. [The one that he wasn't looking for])
10. "You'll really like it there."
( I think so too!)

I can't wait to save up my dollars and visit.
I am sad to have you move farther away, but at least it's on the same coast!!
And it will be a great place to go visit - of course, any place you were would be a great place to visit, but it's nice to have those extra perks.
You lurked CJane so I'm checking you out. I used to live in Portland and I must say it's FABULOUS there - especially if you don't like/want to shave your legs or armpits (it's acceptable there; you can if you want though), food is fresh and tasty, ocean EVERY weekend in less than 2hrs, Saturday Market down by the waterfront, about the cleanest cities I've visited (curbs, etc), the rain is refreshing and makes everything smell nice and look green and lush, not too far from Canada for a weekend jaunt, Tillamook Cheese Factory tours, sales tax free (and you get to use that tax free status when you travel outside the state too), lots of art and more, more, more (a little Billie Idol for ya). Good Luck!
we'll miss you! but portland will be happy!
I too saw your lurk on CJane, Portland is great! You'll love it there. I grew up in Southwest Oregon.
The statement "If you leave, you can never come back" is one of my biggest pet peeves, for some reason. Maybe I will and maybe I won't--why the negativity?
Unrelated, I was wondering how all these people "saw your lurk on Cjane" and was thinking I was way out of it technologically. So I looked at Cjane's blog and saw your comment and it all became clear.
I am pretty sure we will love it in Portland. It's just the whole finding a place to live that's a downer. I wish we had time to go up there again so that I can look IN PERSON!
Did you see Bruce's comment about Jinny's house?
Also, if you hadn't mulled this over already, you could do what Matt and I are doing in DC, which is live in a temporary place for a few months while we look. (We took over the last 2 months of a girl's lease--found it on Craigslist.)
Granted, that means we have to move our stuff twice. (We won't be unpacking most of it.) But I feel a lot more comfortable knowing we'll be able to go see places before committing to a year (or longer) lease. Our friends who are moving to DC at the same time as us are trying to find a permanent place now and are getting frustrated because pictures and a voice on the phone don't always exactly tell you what you need to know.
We have been searching craigslist reeligiously, almost TOO religiously. I might throw the computer out the window.
Not too many 2+ bedrrom apts on the short term rental scene there. Now we just want a place that will take a 6 month lease. And where we won't be mugged and/or shot at.
you will find something - and Jinny would love having you - she has a great house and it's a nice little neighborhood.
Phoebe, My dad had told us that David was hired by a company that starts with a M? Is that true? Are they based in Portland?
Congratulations to David on the new job. The move will be a challenge, but as someone once told me, think of all the new friends you will make. We have met wonderful people everywhere we have lived. New places to see too!
