Team Havoc

I have reached the inner circle.
A few women from my ward (I like to refer to them as girls, because they are young and hip, like me) invited me to join their indoor soccer team.
Me! Phoebe Elizabeth who has never played soccer in my short life. Me, whose only organized sport was swimming, which is so individual I am not sure why there is a team.
These girls are young, fun, blonde (except for one), very snazzy dressers, and really nice. I almost feel as though I moved to Orange County.
So they asked me to join. What could I say? I jumped at the chance. Then I suffered from nerves all week. I went and bought shin guards and soccer socks. I showed up Wednesday night hoping that the team would be so full that I would only have to play for a few minutes, then I could blend in to the bench. I was wrong. 2 minutes in and I was playing. I don't remember which position because and, frankly, I don't even know the rules to soccer. I just followed the other girls leads and tried not to make any obvious mistakes.
Let me sum it up.
1. I kicked a woman on the other team in the shins, REALLY hard. I promise it was an accident. I guess that is what shin guards are for.
2. I scored a goal! I am still unsure on how that happened.
3. We won.
4. I am still nervous about this weeks game.
5. Henry keeps telling me how proud he his that I scored a goal. I'm going to let him keep praising me for as long as I can.

Way to go Pheobe!! I recently turned down a chance to play on a volleyball team. I always seem to either sprain something or break my glasses ( one time I hit the volleyball through the basketball hoop behind me). Maybe when I get contacts I'll have your courage.

Loving the thought of this! Good luck next week. Did I tell you that I did rollerskate ok? I think it was pilates that helped, I felt stronger and had much better balance. I think I could try more new things too!

That is so cool. My sister discovered soccer when she was almost 30. She plays in three leauges now (so she can play all year long) she started a website about the US Womens team and went to fantasy camp. She found a new passion.

It all started when someone asked her to play. Soccer is a great mom sport........you are never too old to play. Good for you......... Glad to see another convert. The US Womens legue is coming back in 2007........ :-) My 6 yr old is obsessed w/ it too.....

Lest anyone think that I had anything to do with Phoebe never playing soccer - let the record show that I used to ask my kids if they wanted to sign up for soccer - and they all said, "NOoooo!"

That said, I think it's great to go and do something out of your comfort zone - that's how you grow - and stay young!!

We are excited to have play by plays to look forward to each week!!

Good jorb! I had the same experience a couple of falls ago when I was asked to play intramural soccer. Yikes.

Now what about your sidebar? Work? No?

1st off. I have to disagree with you, Mom. NO memory of the asking. That and Brownies. YOU are still a wonderful mother, though.
2nd-Hannah is an HTML genius. I owe my straightened out side bar to her.
3rd-I appreciate your words of encouragement. We'll see if I'm still playing next year, but I do really like it.

No one remembers all the stuff I said - I don't even think you listened at the time.

But I love you too!

And adversity builds character!!

I am so jealous! I love soccer - I joined a the JV team in high school under the same circumstances (never played before). I never scored a goal, but it is so much fun! Somehow I don't think my new ID ward has a soccer team for the ladies...

Jess, you could check out the intramurals at ISU. Maybe you could start a new trend in your ward.

I wish we could play on the same team together since I've never played in my life either but would like to try! I admire you for your courage.

Funny, I tried to start playing ASYO in Jr. High and my mom would not support it because I was a "softball" player and "soccer was for kids that have played their entire life." Same thing happened when I wanted to try our for volleyball my freshman year. So softball it was for me.
