I have a few movies to suggest to you all.
Everything is Illuminated.
Starring Elijah Wood as a young, devout Jew, who journeys back to the Ukraine to find the story of his dead grandfather. SO GOOD! With surprisingly funny moments, even though the subject is serious.
Sketches of Frank Gehry
A documentary by Sidney Pollack, who happens to be an old friend of Frank's. An interesting look in to the man behind the buildings, and even an interview with his therapist of more than 30 years.
Akeelah and the Bee
Motivating, feel-good movie. It made me want to be a better speller.
Here are a few that you should NEVER watch.
Newcomers
A early movie with Kate Bosworth (that's how it made it on my cue) It is reminiscent of seminary movies, but without any killer lines. AWFUL! But very clean.
An Inconvenient Truth
Now I actually like Al Gore, but I could not figure out of this movie was an environmental statement OR an Al Gore retrospective including many jabs at the current administration (not that I think that they are undeserved) but it seemed to be a strange forum to do it.
Jersey Girl
I actually resorted to fast forwarding through it and stopping at random intervals to get updates. Liv Tyler is really only good as an elf. And I should have known when J.Lo and Ben Affleck were in it.
Have you seen anything good lately?

lately? no. i did have the producers from netflix for *, yes 8 weeks. and it was so stupid.
i should have known.
i do want to see devil wears prada and marie antoinette - but my record isn't so good.
Yeah, I haven't been watching too many movies lately either. We did watch "American Dreamz" the other night. It was pretty funny, if a little over the top.
I haven't seen any of these movies, although "Everything Is Illuminated" has been on my to-see list. I do have to say that "Jersey Girl" never quite looked like a winner to me either! But I'm a sucker for the rom-coms myself, even the bad ones. Probably why Matt and I spent our free movie tickets last year on horrific duds like "Must Love Dogs" and "A Lot Like Love."
I wouldn't call An Inconvenient Truth something to never see.
we saw akeelah on a plane - quite good.
I just watched Wings of Desire and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. I've given up on watching new things.
Bonny--Akeelah on a Plane? Sequel to Snakes on a Plane?
And Phoebe, if you want to read the books by Jonathan Safran Foer, I liked Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close a lot more than I liked Everything is Illuminated.
Just a snoggestion.
I wouldn't say never on the Al Gore one, but not as good as I had hoped.
I haven't read Everything Is Illuminated.
But I will echo that Extremely Loud, etc. is so very good. It took me awhile to get into it--it's sort of...busy with all the different voices, and the main character is a little bit annoying at first--but I was totally crying by the time I finished the book. Both because of the story's sweetness and a little because I was sad to have it end!
Ok I saw the Sketches of Frank Gehry too and liked it. I'm not sure it has general appeal but the interviews with the therapist were fascinating.
I also saw American Dreamz. pretyy funny, but the ending was a bit out of control. Last night I watched Beneath the Sea, the story of Bobby Darin. Pretty good, but a touch slow.
And DL and I just finished the 7th season of MASH. I believe we have watched something like 150 episodes so far and I am still not tired of it. I think that means I have reached a new level of pathetic. But when you don't have TV you have to rely on the library and Netflix.
hilarious, ph! you are a total mashaholic. i've never watched a single episode. i change the channel when i hear the theme song. yes, i know, that's anethema to dl and apparently you now!
LONG WAY ROUND! phenomenal. loved it. but maybe that's just because i have a crush on the ewan in moulin rouge.
