Calling All Scientists

On e of the perks of living here is that there are a ton of stay-at-home moms that are fairly ambitious. They left big careers to stay home so they take their new jobs pretty seriously. I prefer to ride their coattails.
I got a call a few months ago from a fellow Kindergarten mother inviting Henry to be part of "Science Wednesday". Since they don't have enough time to spend on the sciences in Kindergarten class, these moms are supplementing what happens at school on Wednesday afternoon.
Great for me! I do an experiment with the kids once a month while one of the other moms watches the younger siblings in their fabulous playroom. On my off weeks I help wth the other experiments or take a turn watching kids. Win/Win/Win situation. Henry loves it, Calvin gets to play and I feel like I am enriching Henry's already stellar educationel experience. All of which I would not have done on my own.
As a result, they decided to have the kids participate in the school science fair. Henry and his pals were one of two Kindergarten entries. Henry had a great time showing all the other kids how to make a rocket balloon, and I have to say, it really was one of the most popular tables. Probably because the other kids actually got to participate. And because the dads all got involved and tried to make the balloons go higher and faster.
My question is, Since he did it this year, does that mean I can take the next 2 years off?

Ah, Science Fairs!! The bane of my school years with kids. There always seemed to be Science Fair project due - but thankfully not until middle school.

I don't envy you.

I don't mind book reports though - or author reports - or mission reports - or famous people reports - or country reports.

And I teach Science - albeit a remedial class.

But it looks like everyone was having a good time - and that's what's important.

And I think you will have to keep doing it every year.

I need more information on the afterschool science club you are doing. What topics have you done? How many kids are involved? What are the chances I would ever do this myself?

and you probably only get to take one year off.

The funny part was that these moms had never done a science fair themselves. I kept telling how much I dreaded it when I was in middle school. They couldn't beleive it!
Janelle, you would be great at this. There are 4 boys. We take a turn once a month. We meet for one hour. So far we have done the Cartesian Diver, Rocket Balloons (newton's 3rd law), All About Eggs (how they spin when raw, cooked, if they float in saltwater, fresh water, etc.), and last week we did the strength of paper.
It is actually pretty fun and the kids even learn something sometimes.

how fun! I hope when our kids are in school we are living in the boundaries to a fab school with some ambitious moms.

I can send you a great lesson on how yeast works - we did it last week - and made bread - you could make pretzels though.

I actually learned quite a bit about how yeast works - did you know the Egyptians discovered it??
