Mr. Sandman, bring me a...

I was getting pajamas out for Calvin tonight and Agnes was busy getting in the way. She is determined to empty out a drawer as soon as it is opened. I was trying to quickly put the pajamas back in and she was working just as hard pulling them back out. It was then that I realized that my kids have a lot of pajamas. Maybe too many. So I counted. (I counted the sets with 2 shirts/ 1 pants or 1 shirt/1 pants/1 shorts as one set)

Henry= 11 sets

Calvin = 13 sets

Is this too many? (Okay, I know the answer is yes) What is the "average" number of pajamas that kids have? David and I obviously disagree on this. He thinks 2 pair, I think more. I do laundry pretty often, but I think jammies get kind of stinky after the second day. Maybe your kids are cleaner, but my boys seem smelly even after they have a bath. I think it's their age.

So, readers, these are the important issues weighing on my mind these days. What do you think?

I don't remember how many sets of pj's you kids had - what I do remember is that it didn't matter about how many - what mattered was which ones.

I recall pajamas being dragged out of the dirty clothes - rather than the clean ones in the drawers being used.

And at a certain point - and this may be because I had more girls than boys - a long t-shirt did the job - and we've always had plenty of t-shirts around.

I think my little kids have 3-4 pairs of pjs. And when they run out of those (due to stinkiness!) Then they wear t-shirts. My kids will also try to wear dirty favorite pairs rather than clean not favorite.

I like to have at least 3 pair, but no more than 5. Wow, 11 and 13- that's amazing! In the spring it's hard because some nights you need summer pjs and some nights you need winter pjs.

You can never have enough! My boys love wearing t-shirts from camps etc. I am amazed at how fast they wear out pj's. The minute they get home from church, the first thing they do is put on their pj's. If only they were so willing to go to bed!!

Interesting question as I was just noting that I wish the weather would turn warm here for good because Peter has grown out of his winter PJs and only has 2 pair that fit (you can tell David that I think this is definitely not enough - considering kids pee the bed, stink, eat their breakfast in their PJs and get foodstuff all over them, etc.) He does have more summer PJs, although I think we will still need a couple pairs. I like to have 4 to 6 pairs. I hate feeling like I HAVE to do laundry so I err on the side of caution.

I think 4-5 pairs is a healty number. The bonus to having so many though is that you dont have to wash pj's that often..and less laundry is always a good thing...even if it is pj's.

Bella and Moses have about 10-12 pairs each...they just add up.

Ha! I haven't counted since last year but I have an entire big drawer filled with pajamas, and last year I think I threw out 10 pairs. That's what happens when you get them for Christmas... you start feeling sentimental about them and then you keep them. Ugh.

But I'm still a big fan of the big t-shirt idea. I'm currently sporting leggings and big shirts to bed.

I am a fan of 5 pairs of pj's too. That is my magic number for all clothes. I do 5 Fall outfits and 5 spring outfits and once I know I have purchased five I am not even tempted to look anymore. Especially since the washer always seems to be going, just ask Felipe! Although I am a sucker for the killer cute pj's at GAP and Old Navy, sometimes they go on sale so cheap it is TOO good to pass up:)

5-6 each, but it doesn't matter for Alice, she wears the same frilly princess nightgown to bed every night. I wash that thing 2-3 times a week!

my kids have 6 or 7 pairs, except for Hazel who has about 12 pairs (blame that on handmedowns.) some weeks I'm glad because I don't get around to laundry enough. But other weeks I hate the amount of laundry and am trying to get rid of all the unneccessary clothing so that I don't have 40 loads every week. But the older your kids get, I think that 3 pair is good. I just have a hard to getting rid of clothes that the kids still wear and still fit.

Enoch's pajama drawer is busting out at the seams. I just counted 18pairs of PJS!!! How on earth did I accumulate so many? I thought his drawer looked a little full.

ummmm...I think Theo has about 6 pairs of snug-fit separates and 4 flannel sleepers. He's pretty much grown out of the sleepers and we're on to the separates every night now, so it's probably time to put the sleepers in storage. (LOVE the Carter's sleepers though...we have talked about this...they are so soft and cozy.) My favorite separate PJs for boys are from the Osh Kosh outlet. They are super soft and very cute. I love the Osh Kosh outlet for toddler boy clothes. He also has Old Navy and Carter's, but they are less soft.

When it's really hot he wears a onesie.

To answer your question, I guess less is more but the proper amount can only be determined by how often you do laundry.

3-4, we have three pairs that are worn and if I don't get laundry done when they are needed, there is one pair of just pants that gets used.

I personally think we should all LIVE in jammies. COuldn't hurt!

I am one that my kids have a lot also. For the babies and kids in diapers, I wash them everyday. Younger kids also sweat a lot. I wouldn't want to sleep in sweaty or stinky pj's. My older girls it's about every other day. Mabybe I'm just a germ-a-phobe.

Growing up I wore one pair the entire week. We got to change on the day my mom washed all the sheets (Tuesdays). I loved fresh sheet and clean pj's, maybe that's why I do it.

I don't wash them everyday per say, I change them everyday. That's better : )

You guys are making me feel better about the amount of jammies we own. I am glad to hear that some of you even have 18 (!) pair.

I owe a lot of our PJ's to hand-me-downs. And the fact that I love pajamas. They are so cute, I can't resist them. Especially at a killer Gap sale.

i say 5 pair - unless they are all super cute and give you and your child tremendous amounts of joy - then the number is negotiable.

Phoebe, we have the same situation over here and I was JUST thinking about a couple of days ago. I agree that they get smelly so quick so a week's worth is great. But it is so freeing to get rid of the ones they don't wear much!

I think M and M have about 5 pairs each after today when I cleaned out their drawers and gave the DI the ones with the feet in them that were so little that they were stunting their growth. I am the opposite of you. I hate having to spend money on jammies because no one but the fam sees them in them. I do think it's amazing how no matter WHAT the jammies, kids look darling when they are in their pjs. Also, FYI, I wash them EVERY time they wear them, and after reading these comments I feel a little OC.

My kids have quite a few too. I need long and short ones, footed ones that are fuzzy and thin footed ones. I can't just have two!

HILARIOUS that you posted on this. I have considered posting a 'how many is too many' on several things that I feel may be out of control in my home too.

On the pj's- i think 4-ish so you can have a couple in the laundry. Audrey only wears hers once or twice because she usually eats breakfast in them.
