High on a Mountain Top

Now that we are in day 2 of being "snowed in" I am assessing what I really need to keep on hand in case of being "snowed in". You see, while 3-4 inches may not be anyone else's standard of extreme weather, in our parts in constitutes the shutting down of schools, churches, doctor's appointments, and shopping. David made it out alive on the bus, so I do know that if I truly needed to go somewhere I could, but I am content sitting around, sewing, swapping kids with the neighbor and doing laundry. I am very grateful that David went to the market (no need to poke fun at my charming vernacular-you know who you are) and so we had plenty of food, milk, treats etc. The only daily necessity we don't have is Slurpees. I think that Chithra down at 7-11 is probably worrying about us and I have yet to figure out how to keep Slurpees in our food storage.

But that brings me to my question today.

How do you all store water? Huge barrels? Juice bottles? Jugs? Cases? I want to know. And I want to know where you found the storage containers and where you keep it. Then I need to get some of our own.

Thinking about food storage should keep me plenty busy until I escape from our small mountain community. And for some reason food storage is more interesting to think about than the Christmas cards that I still haven't done.

You won't hear me making fun of "market" anytime soon.

All I know about storing water is that you're not supposed to store it in milk jugs (because they break down). I'm sure you can find some spiffy water storage options online.

I heard a good idea from someone from the old CV1 ward. They put water in washed out 2-liters. Seems to be a good and functional size.

For the record, I am a "Market" person too. My mom always said it and now I say it all the time. No Grocery Store or Store for me.

i agree with the 2 liter idea. but where do you get the 2 liter bottles if you don't drink soda? i usually just buy a bunch of jugs from Smart & Final (does that count as "the market?)...but i try to rotate them every 6 mos due to the evil carcinogens in the plastic. ick. water storage is a pain cuz it takes up so much space...

We use 2 liter bottles too and sometimes milk jugs. We try to empty and refill them every six months too. Although I can't remember doing that recently. There's always the hot tub if we get desperate. ( =

2 liter soda jugs. We don't consume much soda at our house, but I am surprised how quickly they've added up. Sometimes from a party, or church activity we'll have leftovers. Or from the summer time from BBQs and Rootbeer floats.

Anyway, I'm not too worried about bad stuff leaching from the plastic in my foodstorage water. I might Brita filter it before drinking, but even then--I tend to think the problem is a daily constant intake those chemicals--but not for a few weeks in an emergency situation. Maybe I'm wrong to think that. I'm worried enough about it with daily water that we don't use plastic dishes anymore. I'm just glad that we decided to start saving water now.

If I get too perfectionist about it, I'll get overwhelmed and then I won't do anything at all. ;-)

I'm so glad I found your blog! YAY! I want to know where you live, but should probably just email you. And you're reading "Waiting for Birdy!" I LOVE it. Catherine Newman is just...I wish we were neighbors. I love her. I lurrrrve her.

I'd never seen a photo of Agnes...wow! Such a cutie!

I'm off to search for 2 liter bottles, I guess.

I have some big sparklett type bottles in the garage but we are also looking into buying a big 55 gallon drum to put in the side yard. Good luck!

It's cold here too - it stayed in the 40's all day.

It's wimpy SoCal cold, but cold nonetheless.

We have the big 55 gallon drums.

Rotate them occasionally - when we think about it - I figure I can always boil it - on our spiffy propane stove.

Hope we have propane stored.

The snow looks lovely - always does in a picture.

I need to go to the market tomorrow too.

This is what I use for water storage.

I also have a collection of 2-liter soda bottles.

Just thought I would share.

Does keeping a case or two of water bottles on hand count as food storage? I'd like to think it does.

We have big 55 gallon drums, some 2 liter bottles, some gallon bottle (from apple juice)

I miss my well.
Bonny, do you have a hand pump or generator for your well when the power goes out?

It's not great, but we get the boxes of water at Sam's Club that have two 2.5 gallon containers in them that fit nicely into the fridge. We use them and replace as we go because they say that water only really stays good for 6 months to a year. Crazy I know, how does water go bad, but they say it does.

That's really just the drinking water though. We don't have room to store all the extra water you would need. The first thing Ken does when there is an emergency (like the huge storm last January that took out power for two days) is fill up the tub with water so we have it for washing dishes and cleaning and stuff.

I recently purchased 4 55 gallon barrels from Emergency Essentials. If you google for coupons from their store you can usually find free shipping. That was sweet!!
