etsy nonsense

I truly love and support handmade items. I love etsy. I love to peruse etsy and see what fun things I might see. Some of you may remember the cyclops doll that I featured a few years ago. It really is a veritable treasure trove of randomness. I love it. I especially love it when I come across nonsense like this. A car seat handle cushion? Really? How many miles do you carry your infant car seat? I do acknowledge that car seats become heavy and awkward and uncomfortable. Here is a thought, though-use a stroller, get a Baby Bjorn or maybe even carry your infant sans carseat (shocker!). I apologize for any readers that I may have offended. Maybe you own one or plan on buying one, but please consider the other options before exposing yourself to ridicule from me.

Every time I haul that awkward beast into my house from the car I wonder why in the world so many people lug them around. I'd much rather carry my snuggly baby! Maybe my oversized baby influences my feelings on this...?

With my older kids there wasn't a handle on the seat. It was for the car (you know, CAR SEAT). I would rather carry my babies. Especially at church. I loved to hold them. They aren't small and cuddly for very long.

Side note-When I finally had a seat with a handle I got tennis elbow from carrying it with one arm. I had to carry it with both arms, like it didn't have a handle.

I say carry the baby. Leave the car seat in the car.
(Ok, I have opinions about this)

Another vote for actual baby holding here. We didn't even have a car seat that came out of the car with Peter.

I can't imagine anyone actually buying this. Or thinking it up!

I never carried Theo around in the carseat...it was sling/bjorn or my arms only. I did with Ida when she was napping and I had to run a quick errand...but instead of carrying the seat, I used a snap'n'go stroller frame. I got rid of that and it was a steal at a thrift store in the first place so I doubt I will have one again. (it was very handy but I had nowhere to store it when I was done.)

Anyway. I am mostly in the camp of, hold your cute little baby. Partly in the camp of, use the carseat occasionally if it's more convenient to let the baby sleep if you are darting into the store for just a minute.

Reminds of this rather unnecessary piece of equipment...

Can you imagine?

Corri-that is quite a find! How have we lived without it?

Karen-laughing at the tennis elbow comment. Sorry you had to endure it, but laughing about how you would explain getting tennis elbow from carrying a car seat around.

As for using the infant car seat moderately-I do use it. I take it into the grocery store or sometimes pop it into the stroller. My experience has usually been that my kids do not stay asleep in the car seat for very long, so then I am lugging a car seat AND a baby around. And by the number of empty car seats I see laying around at gatherings with children, I think most other people have this experience, too.

"Infant seats" - prior to the advent of car seats - were these gaudy plastic affairs that were pretty offensive aesthetically. But everyone carried them around - in their arms - with the baby in the carrier! Dad and I were pretty emphatic about rejecting them, but we were given one as a gift. We actually have a photo of Bonny in it. It was good for feeding a baby solid food - they were on a slope, so the food went down easier!!

I think infant car seats are heavy - I'd either go the stroller frame that holds them or use a sling - or just carry them - which is pretty much what I did.

That Flying Falcon Infant Seat Carrier is a piece of work - I just hope they don't catch on - imagine being in an elevator at the doctor's office and having 3 women with FFIS's try to get on at one time!!

But then again - some people will buy anything!

Well, the Flying Falcon would prevent tennis elbow.

I actually did use my seat moderately,(quick runs into a store with a sleeping baby, sick baby sleeping on a slope, etc.) I loved my front pack (before the sling days!)

I think my dislike of car seats came from knowing someone who's baby spent all his time in the car seat, (slept, bottle propped up, etc) I didn't want to do that with my babies.

Besides, I like to hold them.
