For the love of the Sonicare

David has receding gums. It is a problem. If your gums recede too far your teeth will fall out and then you won't be able to eat corn on the cob ever again. I don't know about you, but that would make me really sad.

So we spent a lot of money (actually, our insurance company did) and DL had gum transplants. The process sounds terrible. They cut tissue from the roof of your mouth and transplant it ontoyour gums. He had to be awake for the whole thing (3 hours) with his mouth stretched wide open. No thank you.

After the whole thing was done, the dentist recommended that David start using a Sonicare to prevent further recession in the gums. Of course, David disregarded this since the fancy toothbrushes aren't exactly cheap. So when DL's birthday rolled around I suggested this gift to David's parents and they got it for him. Long story longer-the Sonicare at Costco comes with a bonus handle. Now I, too, am preventing gum recession every morning and evening and it is fantastic.

Bottom line, go and get a fancy toothbrush that beeps every 30 seconds to tell you to switch to the next quadrant of your mouth. You teeth have never felt so clean.

Phoebe! I am so sorry . . . I completely forgot I was going to give you mine!
I'd like it, but it makes my nose tickle, my eyes water and my brain vibrate inside my skull (which may or may not be a slight exaggeration.)
Needless to say, I don't tolerate it well.
I am so glad you like it.

I should splurge - let's just say my pregnancies have done absolutely nothing for my teeth!

Gum transplants? Doesn't sound fun at all. Did you get a before and after?

Robbie uses a Sonicare and I totally used to make fun of him for it until I felt like my gums were receding too. Oops.

I had gum transplants a few years ago for the same problem Worst ever. I need to get one of these toothbrushes! My mom has one and has been raving about it for awhile.

Jeff and I used to use a sonicare(because of the whole receding gums thing). And then I fell out of the habit. I think it was pregnancy. I can barely brush my teeth for a few seconds the first few months (darn gag reflex with morning sickness) And then I never got back into the habit. Thanks to your post I am now charging my handle to see if it will still work. If it does I will buy some new brushes.

Yikes. Good to know. I have the same problem. It seems that years of brace wearing can stress your mouth out and it reacts by receding back into your brain. That and Pregnancy which makes a mess of teeth. I tried the Orab B, but the jostling made my nose to itchy, but I guess I can deal with an itchy nose of gum transplants! Ouch.

I should say that the first week or so of using the Sonicare, it tickled and itched a lot. Then I got used to it. (btw I got the twinpack as you suggested and did in fact give it to Matt for V-day! He got me a pillow since mine went flat, so I guess it was a practical-gifts V-day!)

I still use my regular toothbrush about once a day. (I obsessively brush my teeth throughout the day, which is one reason my gums are also receding, according to my dentist.) But I agree, it does leave your mouth feeling clean. I am still obsessive about flossing and mouthwash though. Probably a good thing.
