Kill 'em with kindness
After a frustrating interaction with our less-than-desirable neighbors (I could go on and on about their backwoods, drunken trashiness and complete disregard for the rest of humanity, but I won't) I was at a loss with what to do. I see these people every day and I hate feeling like I want/need/should avoid them. So I headed back out and offered to help them out. The look of shock and surprise told me that maybe the biggest problem these neighbors face is that they have no one left that is kind to them. Unfortunately for them, they have burned all their neighborly bridges. Everyone else that lives up here gets along and helps each other out, but this couple has alienated themselves. So I loaded up their junk and took it to the big recycling place downtown. It was easy to do, but I had to force myself to make the offer. While I was loading up the van, the boyfriend apologized for what he did and the girlfriend was in tears and gave me a (smokey) hug. What would it be to always feel like the entire world was against you? Hopefully I can keep my cool the next time they drive me insane...because I have a feeling there will be a next time.

good for you! the hardest part is always being the bigger person (though i have little experience in this area, i usually just complain and do nothing about it?) so it's really nice to hear this story.
More than once I have "killed them with kindness" so to speak - and it always works - and the nice corollary is that when you are kind to people, you start to care about them more.
As Mr. Rogers would say, "I'm proud of you!"
WWJD.
This is great. Good for you!

Great story! I have had my share of inconsiderate neighbors. Being kind is the best (and sometimes hardest) thing to do.
Oh Chester, Chester, Chester.....
